What can I do to protect myself from identity theft?
There are several easy steps that can help you prevent identity theft. These include:
- Monitor your credit: You are entitled to a free copy of your annual credit report from each of the ‘big three’ monitoring firms (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). Check your report on a regular basis for any errors or discrepancies.
- Say No: If merchants request your credit card number or Social Security Number on personal checks, politely decline
- Do not have your drivers license number printed on your personal checks
- Guard your mail and trash from theft
- Use passwords
How do thieves commit identity theft?
There are many avenues for criminals to obtain your personal identification and identity thieves are always coming up with new ones. Below are just a few of the more popular techniques thieves use:
- Shoulder Surfing: watching you from a nearby location as you punch in your calling card number or credit card number. The use of cell phones has enabled thieves to take snap shots of your credit cards and record you pin numbers.
- Dumpster Diving: sorting through garbage cans or dumpsters near your home or office to obtain copies of checks, credit card or bank statements or other documents that contain your personal data
- Pre-Approved Credit Cards: criminals will retrieve discarded pre-approved credit card materials and try to activate the cards for their use without your knowledge
- Via the Internet: criminals use spam mail trying to retrieve personal data
