Our History

Timeline of Events

Summit Credit Union was chartered in 1935 by a group of Southern Bell employees in the Triad area of North Carolina. The Credit Union was originally chartered as Tri-City Telco Credit Union and served telephone employees in Greensboro, Burlington, and Reidsville, NC. Our office was a mere closet in the phone company’s Dial Building in Greensboro. We grew steadily over the years and in 1976 merged with the Twin City Telco Credit Union, which served telephone employees in Winston-Salem. At that time our name was changed to First Telco Credit Union. Following the Government’s dismantling of the “Ma Bell” system in 1984, we began providing financial services to employees in a variety of companies in addition to Bell South. Then, in 1991, after adding many new employee groups, and merging several credit unions, our name was changed to what it is today -- Summit Credit Union.

Over the years we have merged numerous credit unions into our operation, generally because those credit unions wanted to offer a wider array of financial services to their members. Some of the credit unions we have merged include Methodist Ministers CU, North Carolina Federation of the Blind CU, News-Record CU, The News & Observer CU, Ed-Med CU (Wake Forest and Baptist Hospital), Rex Hospital CU, Frye Hospital CU, Guilford County CU, Forsyth County Employees’ CU, Tobacco CU, and Horizon (Dairymen) CU, just to name a few.

From humble beginnings in 1935, Summit Credit Union has grown to become a leader and innovator in providing financial services. We are proud that we offer nearly every “banking” service that you would expect from your financial institution, and some that you wouldn’t, like depositing checks from your smart phone.

We have been providing top-quality financial services to our members for over 80 years and we have been successful because we strive to do what is the right thing for our members. If you are not a member, just give us a try. You won’t be disappointed by our service portfolio or by our service delivery.
